Visit the Crawford Long Museum, the “Birthplace of Anesthesia” and the site of the first painless surgery, performed March 30, 1842, by Dr. Crawford W. Long. Explore the permanent exhibits that tell the story of Dr. Long, his family and achievements, and his work in pharmacy. Browse the mid-1800s general store, reflecting the past culture of Jackson County; and trace the development of anesthesia, from 1842 to advanced modern operating technology. Discover the site of “America’s greatest contribution to medicine.” The museum is located on the Jefferson public square at 28 College Street, Jefferson.
